Behind the Seams...Robert Dennis Wilson

                                               Author Robert Dennis Wilson

VS: How did you get started in writing? Was it [something] you always wanted to do?

Bob: I have been writing poetry for as long as I can remember, along with some short stories. An English teacher in High School must have seen some potential in me, because he took me under his wing and greatly encouraged me in my writing. Jesus Christ crashed into my life when I was 17 and rearranged all of my priorities, so that at the age of 18 I found myself attending a Bible College in hopes of becoming a missionary/Bible teacher. The idea for my Sci-Fi series, and with it the compulsion to write novels, first struck me in my sophomore year. That was 1969! So I have been working on this Sci-Fi story for almost my entire adult life. In 1991 I attended my first Christian Writers' Conference and walked out of there with the beginning of my writing education and their “Alpha Award” for the Best New Writer of Christian Fiction, based on the still incomplete manuscript of this Sci-Fi Novel. That did more to legitimize my opinion of myself as a writer, than any other event – up to this month.

VS:  Tell us about your book genre. What's the difference between Sci-Fi and Christian Sci-fi?

Bob: In this series, I have "religiously" attempted to minimize that difference, so that most of its novels will be written from what I would consider a non-Christian viewpoint [though some characters are definitely Christians and let the other know]. My goal is to grab the attention of those who believe in the “evolution” of man’s psychic talents, in our growing "powers", and special New Age abilities,  and take them on an action-filled  journey that will start tomorrow and lead them into their predestined future. In reality the difference between the two types of Science Fiction is in the world view of the writer. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I believe that God is ultimately in charge, opposes a real spiritual enemy, and has a plan laid out for the future of humanity. My characters are forced to live within that structure, even though it is against their very nature and is something they would change it by force if they could. I used one other construct to force my readers to look beyond their preconceptions about “Christianity”: I never use that label in the entire novel, instead replacing even the common names of Christ with the very first name He was ever given in the Bible, “The Seed”, from Gen 3:15. So His disciples are simply called “Followers of the Seed”.

VS: How did it feel to be the #1 book in Amazon's Top Free 100? That is huge, by the way. Congrats!

Bob: Thank you! However, this is the second time this month that something like this has occurred; the first time was with my Christian Fantasy, "THE POISON OF THORNS: The Dragon's Back #1”. It reached the top of Free Christian Sci-Fi and Fantasy, and has remained in the top 50 of 3 different Paid categories ever since. So that experience somewhat softened the initial shock at seeing "THE PLAYERS: Earth: The Arena #1" at the top of all Free Science Fiction. I think the thing that has had a much bigger impact on me, is NOT the ratings – but that, between the two free e-novel promos this month on Amazon, well over 14,000 copies of my novels now have the active potential of touching the lives of my readers! The reality of that fact has laid a great weight on me! It is the sudden weight of greater scrutiny and responsibility - responsibility not FROM but FOR my readers to be a faithful messenger of the Truth - but even more, I feel scrutiny from HIM who holds my destiny in His Hands. "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness." [James 3:1 ESV]

VS: What is your latest book release?

Bob: Last December I self-published the second novel in my Christian Fantasy Trilogy, “MY BROTHER’S KEEPER: The Dragon’s Back #2”. This epic high adventure is much more overtly Christian and has been compared to the writings of CS Lewis and even Tolkien by some of the authors who have posted reviews. I could only hope to follow remotely in the lofty footsteps! Imagine an isolated land shaped like an immense Dragon floating over a bottomless Sea. Its long neck makes a circle and rests between his shoulders, looking, as it were, down the expanse of a vast Valley lying between the twin mountainous spines that form the edges of this continent. From its mouth flows a River, the only running water source in the land, for it never rains on Dragonsback.

VS: Is there anything that helps you get inspired to write? (on those days when you just need to sit down and write)

Bob: Prayer and Bible study help a lot as I will often get nudges from my Commander and Chief to move in certain directions. I avoid the guilt and pressure of trying to live under rigid goals of word or page counts and instead promise myself to write “something” each day.  When a “writer” puts in 8 to 10 hours a day beforehand sitting at a computer doing computer programming – there is sometimes very little left of the creative juices that can tie him to that same chair [I telecommute for an international transportation company] and inspire his fingers to type on that same keyboard. Knowing that I am writing for a Purpose helps me keep going.

VS: What advice do you have for struggling writers?

Bob: Attend Writers’ Conferences: they provide education, encouragement, networking with other authors, and a chance to meet with agents and publishers.
2) Get involved in a local critique group, if at all possible.
3) Read, Read, then Read some more. Critique what you read. What makes a novel good or bad in your opinion? How are plot and character development handled?
4) Set up a Pinterest board with things that remind you of what you are writing about, so you can actually see what they look like! Find “their house”, clothes, faces, environment, tools, transportation, etc. Please visit http://pinterest.com/robtdwilson/looks-like-dragonsback-fiction-trilogy/ for an example, where I have reconstructed my entire Dragonsback fantasy realm with captured photos.
5) Do NOT try to imitate other authors. Find your own voice or style. Let who YOU are be reflected in your writing.
6) Always know the purpose or message behind the work you are doing. Understanding the message of a book not only gives you focus, but, if it is something you truly believe in, then it can also be a great motivator. If your goal is simply to produce a certain number of words, then your writing will soon stall under the weight of that burden; if, however, your goal is to convey a needed message, then that NEED will become your engine, the Message your fuel, and your Focus the tool that shapes and streamlines the vehicle of your design.

VS: Thank you so much for your time, Bob. You're very passionate about what you do. I'm sure it is inspiring to many readers, along with fellow writers. I cannot wait to read your books. I have a long list I will eventually get through. lol. I am fascinated by the world you've created. Thanks again, Bob!

Behind the Seams...Shon Hyneman

                                                 Author Shon Hyneman

VS:  How did Never Again Ministries begin?

Shon: Never Again Ministries was birthed in 2008 when I wrote my first book If You Apply These Principles: God Is More Practical than We Think. As I was writing the book I heard God give me the name and the vision for the ministry. From that day forward I wrote 3 books, numerous interviews and our radio show which is broadcast on three different stations.

VS: What products do you have to offer?

Shon: We offer Marriage/Relationship coaching sessions, MP3 downloads and four published books.

VS:  Can you tell us about The Doctor of Love show?

Shon: The Doctor of Love Show first aired in May 2010. The idea of the show was based on We discuss real topics on marriage and relationship topics that will help you grow in a spiritual and practical way so that you can apply it to your everyday life. Some of our most popular shows included topics on Sex, money, blended families and knowing how to successfully date as a single. The show was recorded every week, we have over 10,000 downloads and counting.

VS: Single people can get lonely and settle for unequally yoked relationships or get into the habit of careless dating. What advice can you offer to someone who wants to wait for God's best?

Shon: Stay busy for God (ministry, mentoring) and not focus on getting in a relationship. Focus on getting you together first (fixing credit, taking care of your health, your relationship with God) When busy, the mind won’t be idle so the focus won’t be on getting a spouse. Most desire to marry but sometimes people don’t take the time to enjoy their singleness.

VS: Do you believe premarital counseling is critical during the courtship process?

Shon: Yes! I think most people overlook the importance of premarital counseling. The one who is counseling the engaged couple can see things the couple can’t see. I tell singles if the one you're dating doesn’t want premarital counseling, they are the wrong one.

VS: Divorce seems to be an epidemic these days. What do you think some of the major problems are that contribute to it?

Shon: I believe the major factor of divorce is a lack of healthy fear in God, along with lack of communication and selfishness.

VS: What do you think promotes healthy marriages?

Shon: What promotes healthy marriage is good communication, speaking life to your spouse, creating memories, selflessness and much prayer.

Author Bios:

Shon was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio for 25 years and in 2004 moved to Phoenix, Arizona with his family. He is happily married for ten years to Londina and has two children. Shon is the owner of Never Again Ministries which promotes Marriage Enhancement and Holistic Relationships in God. He's an Author, Speaker, Ordained Minister, Mentor and radio personality for "The Doctor of Love" show which is broadcast on three different stations. Behind the Seams...Author Zari Banks

   Author Zari Banks

VS: When did you realize you were called to write?

Zari: I've always been a writer. Been writing stories, that I can recall, since I was about 7 years old. I have a bachelor's degree in Journalism and started out as a sportswriter at my hometown paper.

VS: Please tell about your new devotional book, O Lord, Hear My Cry.

Zari: O Lord, Hear My Cry: A Book of Psalms Devotional is a 30-day devotional for those needing supernatural rescue. It was composed, not be published, but as prayers in my journal when I was ready to die because I couldn't handle what was happening in my life in my own strength. When I called out to God and reminded Him that He promised to answer me, He told me to read the Psalms. He was directing me to my rescue and I'm still here because He is faithful.

VS: Do you find that the topic of your books are something you're dealing with in your own personal/spiritual life? Or are these revelations for others?

Zari: My prayer devotionals are absolutely written from personal experience. However, they will bless others because they're all about clinging to God and submersing yourself in His word. But, they were my road to redemption.

VS: You're also a freelance editor-right? Does that make writing a bit easier?

Zari: Yes, I am a freelance editor and writer. I'd have to say it makes harder because I try to not write while I'm editing so that I don't borrow unintentionally. As far as when I'm writing website content for a client, I just have to really pay attention because style is different between book format and articles and blogs which often use AP Style.

VS: Are your books ever used in ministry? It seems they would be an amazing tool for bible studies.

Zari: You know they're not used in ministry, but since you said that I receive it and agree in Jesus' name, and I'm going to pray about it and present as a Bible study/small group tool. Thank you.

VS: What advice can you offer to aspiring authors?

Zari: Write. All the time. Lots of different things. And, read. All the time. Lots of different things.

Thank you so much for this opportunity! Have a wonderful day!
Thank you for hosting me!

VS: Thank you so much for being my guest on the blog. I cannot wait to read your books. The titles alone get me. There's so much I need to learn. But, that's the process of molding-right? God bless you, Zari. And I would love to have you back on the blog any time!

Behind the Seams...Author Katy Lee

Another world...

                                                       Author Katy Lee

Good morning, everyone! Happy Friday! Today, we are fortunate enough to interview an awesome author, Katy Lee. I'm new to the gaming/fiction genre and I enjoyed learning about Katy's book. Let's get started.

VS: Please tell me about yourself.

I’ve always loved creating things, which also means learning how things come together from idea to product and everything in between. Sewing and quilting were big hobbies in my life, and then knitting. But everything I did had a plan, a pattern to follow. If I skimped, it would not come out right. If I didn’t fix my mistakes, it would ruin the finished product, or worse, get thrown into my basket, never to be finished.

Katy: I’ve also always had a love for reading and admired the talents of many writers who could perfectly place words down on a page to make them flow like music, or bind together like a perfectly knitted piece. I’ll admit I had tried my hand at writing a few times, starting back in fifth grade, but it wasn’t until 2005 when an idea for a story came to me that I decided to try writing again. But this time I did things a little differently. I researched on how a story comes together. The idea to product and everything in between, and three months later I had completed my first novel. It was when I learned that every kind creation has a plan, a pattern that needs to be followed that I could now call myself a writer.

VS: Tell us about Real Virtue and the main character.

Katy: In my new release, Real Virtue, my heroine is a gamer. My story opens with Mel Mesini reaching the highest level in this online interactive game she plays. A game that promises her a life she can love. She’s playing while she is supposed to be working. She plays because she doesn’t feel so great about her real life. She plays because it’s a perfect world she can control—until someone begins messing with her virtual life, breaking into her account and stealing all her possessions.

BLURB:
In a virtual reality game where she can fly, someone’s aiming to take her down.

Mel Mesini is a New York City restaurateur and an avid, virtual reality world traveler. She’s risen above her misfit life and now bears a striking resemblance to her glamorous, gaming avatar. But her successful life—both online and in reality—takes a swerve the night her father is seriously injured in a hit-and-run. Mel is careened back to her judgmental hometown, where being the daughter of the town’s crazy lady had made her the outcast she was. To make matters worse, Officer Jeremy Stiles, the man whose harsh, rejecting words had cut her the deepest, is heading the investigation.

Jeremy knows he hurt Mel and attempts to make amends by finding her father’s assailant. When he realizes she’s the actual target, his plan for reconciliation turns to one of protection—whether she wants his help or not. What he wants is answers, especially about this online game she plays. Is it a harmless pastime as she says? Or is she using it to cover something up? As a faceless predator destroys the things that matter to her, Jeremy knows he’s running out of time before she loses the one thing that matters most—her real life.

VS: What inspired you to write this book?

Katy: So there I was, flying cross-country, when the older gentleman to my right asks me if I have a virtual life.

“A virtual what?” came my reply.

He then continued to explain the details of his job of creating virtual possessions that gamers on interactive game sites can purchase for their avatars.

“Seriously? People spend money on a fake character?” And apparently enough for this guy to make a living on.

So, the remainder of my long flight was spent plotting out the story that would become Real Virtue.

My questions to myself were what would happen to someone who took their virtual life just a little too far? What would happen if that said someone lost all these possessions to, say, a villain bent on revenge? How far would someone go to protect their virtual life? Would they be willing to give up their real life for it? Just what would drive a person to do it?

And since I write romance, my next question was just what kind of person would be their perfect match? I needed a hero that was intelligent and real. Someone handsome and brave. Someone who could outshine Mel’s alluring fantasy world. And Voila! Jeremy Stiles was born. (In my opinion, the world could use more Jeremy’s.)

VS: What are your plans for the future? Will Real Virtue be the first in a series, or is it a stand alone book?

Katy: I currently have a second and third book written, (But not edited yet) and I’m not sure when they will come about. Right now, I am writing another series for a different publisher, and those seem to be taking most of my time up.

VS: What do you think makes your book stand out in the genre of Christian fiction?

Katy: First, I think Christian Fiction has come a long way from its earlier days. There are some really great authors out there who are not afraid to break the mold and be honest in their stories. Our world is broken and needs to be healed. The True Healer knew that stories had the power to do just that.

In Real Virtue, the topic of gaming addiction is interwoven throughout. Gaming addiction is becoming an increasingly difficult problem with the youths in America today? It can affect the everyday life and social situations of children through young adults. Video game addiction can hinder a child's learning skills, cause real life problem solving to become more difficult, and cause a child to spend far less time with family and friends. During my research, I read many interviews with gamers, mostly teens and young adults, where they admit to preferring their virtual lives over their real ones. Video games can become super appealing, especially if the player’s real life is not so great. In a game, a player can zap out of a situation they don’t like. They can’t do that in real life. In a game, a player is rewarded for beating the next level or quest. In real life, it’s hard to accomplish things, and even when you do, people don’t always notice, or for some, care.

Real Virtue could really stand out as a story that changes hearts and minds in this area.

VS: What advice can you offer to aspiring authors?

Katy: My advice to aspiring authors: Don’t be afraid to break the mold. Write from your heart, from your characters’ hearts. Be honest in your stories.

Thank you so much for inviting me to hang out with you today! I love comments, and I would also like to stay connected with you all, so please check out my website at www.KatyLeeBooks.com. You’ll see links for Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads, where we can stay in touch.

VS: Thank you for visiting, Katy! I'm thrilled and honored! This has been, by far, one of the most fascinating interviews. I enjoy certain online games. I've never thought about writing a story about the wonderful world of gaming. Your gaming-fiction concept is absolutely clever.

Author Bio:

Katy Lee writes higher purpose stories in high speed worlds. As an inspirational author, speaker, home-schooling mom, and children’s ministry director, she has dedicated her life to sharing tales of love, from the greatest love story ever told to those sweet romantic stories of falling in love. Her fresh and unique voice brings a fast-paced and modern feel to her romances that are sure to resonate with readers long after the last page. Her debut novel Real Virtue is a finalist in many writing contests, and took second place in the 2011 Georgia Maggie Award of Excellence. Katy lives in New England with her husband, three children, and two cats.

Real Virtue is available in ebook now, (Paperback in the fall) at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I would love to hear what you think of Mel and Jeremy’s story!

A Note from Vanessa's Desk...Perserverance

Hello!

I must have gotten my second wind! I will admit it; I wasn't exactly stoked to begin the rough draft edit on Something to Talk About. But, some family members and friends encouraged me when I uploaded the first chapter on Face book. Now, I'm excited! And I'm actually enjoying re-reading the book, as I prepare it for my writing coach/editor.

It's also a reminder of what perseverance truly means. It's funny, a family member actually bought me a sign with the word and meaning on it. Love it! And I'm reminded of why I do this. I write because I believe it's God's calling on my life. And I write for my readers, who tell me how much they enjoyed/are enjoying the current novella, THE CLASH OF THE BRIDESMAIDS.

So, a big thanks to those who encouraged me on Face book to put the pedal to the metal! Lol! God bless each of you! I exist as a writer because of you guys.

Until next time, Fashionistas!

A Note from Vanessa's Desk...Book Launch Dinner

Good Afternoon,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I did! It was busy, but great.

THE CLASH OF THE BRIDESMAIDS book launch dinner 5/4/12

My first novella, THE CLASH OF THE BRIDESMAIDS has been up on Amazon for about a month. God is good! I hosted a book launch dinner in my hometown on Friday night, and so many people showed up. It surprised and blessed me in a major way. I can say this, never take your family and dear friends for granted. They will come through for you when it's humanly possible. We were missing a few people, but things come up and I completely understand that. For a first book launch dinner, I felt it was a success.

Upcoming Events:

I will be doing a book signing at the Navasota Public Library in Navasota, Texas. As soon as I know the date, it will be announced here and on my Facebook page.

Something to Talk About:

A few readers are already asking for the next book. Thank you for that, by the way! That is a writer's dream come true. The next novella to be released (mid-June, God willing) is in the works. It's currently in rough draft form and almost ready to be looked over, again. There's also another huge blessing coming up with the editing/coaching project, but I cannot release that info just yet. Anyway, it should be complete by the end of May or early June. I'm seriously considering posting a sample chapter for my readers. What do you think?

I'm so excited about this book. One of my beta readers, who has read all seven of my manuscripts, says this book is her favorite. The heroine is Whitney Green, an almost thirty year-old divorcee. She's afraid of falling in love again, after her ex-husband humiliated her. But, just when she thinks there may be chance with a new guy, her ex-husband comes back. And worse, he comes back as the man she married. I cannot tell you anymore than that, but it will be out on Amazon this summer.

I guess that's all for now. Hope you have a super blessed week.

Until next time, Fashionistas!
